This past Saturday, our training program students and coaches gathered at Godfather’s Pizza for a day filled with laughter, friendly competition, and, of course, delicious pizza. This end-of-summer party was a special opportunity for coaches and students to spend time together outside the traditional “classroom” setting.
As soon as the pizzas arrived, the atmosphere was set for a perfect combination of fun and learning. The smell of fresh pizza filled the air as everyone dug in, refueling before the chess began. The tables quickly filled with plates of pizza slices, chess boards, and eager players ready to challenge each other.
The highlight of the day was the spirited bughouse and blitz matches that followed. Bughouse, a variant of chess played as teams of two rather than individuals, brought out the excitement and strategic thinking in everyone. Laughter and shouts of encouragement echoed throughout the restaurant as teammates swapped pieces and coordinated their moves. It was a fantastic way for students to test their quick thinking and for coaches to demonstrate the importance of teamwork and communication. Blitz games also featured, where students and coaches went head-to-head in intense, timed matches. The rapid pace of blitz, with only a few minutes on the clock, added an extra layer of thrill. Students got the chance to challenge their coaches and their friends, with matches often drawing a crowd of onlookers cheering for their favorites.
But the day wasn’t just about competition. It was a day of celebrating Puddletown Chess’s community. Coaches and students shared stories, exchanged chess tips, and got to know each other in a more relaxed environment. It was also a reminder that chess is not just a game of intellect, but also a way to build friendships and enjoy shared experiences.
As the afternoon wound down, everyone left with full bellies, new chess strategies, and fond memories of a day well spent. We’re already looking forward to the next time we can gather for more pizza and chess!
