Bio

Ethan Zhang is currently a 10th grader at Westview High School. He has been playing chess for many years since elementary school; he has been a top player in the state for his grade and has won awards at the OSCF State Championship at Seaside. He has also participated in and won awards at other tournaments, such as the Oregon Open or the Oregon High School Chess Tournament Association 2023 State Championship. 

Ethan also has much teaching experience, both in chess and in other subjects. Since 2020, he has participated in many teaching programs (e.g., teaching a summer camp for chess in the summer of 2022 as an OSCF Summer Fellowship award winner). Aside from chess, he also has teaching experience in subjects like cybersecurity or math where he has hosted many seminars and sessions. He has spent much time teaching and has gained much experience from it. 

Besides chess, Ethan also enjoys activities such as tennis, math and computer science, including cybersecurity and programming.

  • Member of Oregon High School Chess Team Championship Varsity division 2023 champion team, champion of the 3rd board.
  • 4th place – 2022  OSCF State Championship — High School Platinum
  • 3rd place – 2019  OSCF State Championship — Middle School Platinum
  • 1st place – Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation (OSCF) Chess Tournament K-8 Open
  • Received the 2022 Oregon Chess Project Summer Fellowship Award
  • Received the 2022 Presidential Volunteer Service Gold Award for over 100 volunteer hours of community services
