Inside Our Winning Chess Program

Introduction

At Puddletown Chess, we’ve developed a unique and hands-on training program designed to help students grow their chess skills in a structured and engaging way. Unlike many traditional programs, we emphasize consistent coaching, interactive learning, and reinforcement strategies to ensure students not only learn chess but master it over time. And even more importantly, every student thoroughly enjoys the journey!

A Clear Path to Growth – Six Levels of Training

One of the biggest strengths of our program is its 6-level structure, allowing students to progress from complete beginners (0 rating) to an advanced level (USCF 1600-1800 rating). Each level is carefully designed to build on the previous one, ensuring a smooth transition between stages.

What makes this structure effective is the consistency in coaching styles, class agenda and curriculum. No matter which coach a student trains with, the teaching methods, lesson plans, and assignments remain strikingly uniform. This means students won’t have to adjust to different teaching styles as they progress.

90-Minute Sessions – More Time, Better Learning

Most chess classes last only 60 minutes, but for all except Level 1, we’ve extended ours to 90 minutes to give students extra time for deeper learning. Our classes follow a structured format that keeps students engaged:

1. Homework Review (First 15-20 Minutes)

At the end of each class, students receive 8-12 puzzles as homework. During the next session, before starting new material, coaches thoroughly review the previous week’s homework, ensuring that students fully understand the concepts before moving forward.

2. Learning & Interactive Problem-Solving (Next 45 Minutes)

  • Students are introduced to two to three new chess concepts based on their level.
  • Instead of just listening, they actively participate—solving puzzles and explaining their thought process to the group.
  • Coaches ask students to answer questions on the spot, which keeps them focused and engaged while also building critical thinking and communication skills.

3. Quick Break (5 Minutes)

A short break allows students to refresh and reset before the final segment of class.

4. Fun, Engaging Chess Activities (Last 25 Minutes)

Learning should be enjoyable! The final part of each class includes interactive games and challenges, such as:

  • Tandem Game Against a Bot – Students take turns deciding the next move in a game against an AI.
  • Online Arena Battles – Students compete against each other in a fast-paced tournament.
  • Simul Games with the Coach – The coach plays multiple students at once, challenging them while offering valuable feedback.

These activities ensure that students apply what they’ve learned in a fun and competitive setting.

Extra Support & Reinforcement – Why It Works

Our program doesn’t just rely on class time. We offer additional reinforcement through homework, feedback, and one-on-one coaching.

  • Homework & Personalized Feedback
    • Coaches send out homework after each class.
    • A teaching assistant or secondary coach reviews the answers, providing feedback and corrections.
    • This ensures that students receive individualized guidance on their progress.
  • Thursday Office Hours – One-on-One Help
    • Before the next class, students can attend Thursday office hours for 10-15 minutes of personal coaching.
    • This allows them to ask questions and clarify anything they’re struggling with before the next session.
  • Weekly Review & Concept Reinforcement
    • When students return on Friday, the coach goes over the homework again, providing a final layer of reinforcement.

By having multiple opportunities to review and practice concepts, students can fully absorb and retain their learning over time.

Why Our Approach Works

Unlike other chess programs that focus only on theory, we ensure that students:
Develop strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
Stay engaged with hands-on learning and interactive games
Build confidence by communicating and explaining their moves
Receive personalized support and feedback every step of the way

Our structured approach, extended class times, and emphasis on reinforcement make our training program a proven success. Whether students are just starting or aiming to become advanced players, Puddletown Chess provides the foundation they need to grow, compete, and enjoy the game.
