Scholarships
Puddletown Chess is committed to giving back to the community. To that end, several scholarships have been created to award to qualified players:
Pawn to Victory Chess Fund
- The purpose of this fund is to support budding chess enthusiasts, encouraging their active participation in tournaments, fostering skill development, resilience in the face of setbacks, and instilling values of sportsmanship and fair play.
- The Pawn to Victory Chess Fund extends its sponsorship to chess clubs and teams in rural areas, addressing the longstanding challenge of limited resources for enthusiasts in these regions. Specifically, the fund facilitates the establishment of after-school chess clubs, providing financial assistance for participation in chess tournaments in the Portland area.
- Additionally, the fund extends its support to players from low-income families.
Scholarship for Excellence in Girls’ Chess
This scholarship exclusively benefits female chess players, recognizing that chess transcends gender boundaries, offering an equal playing field for girls, boys, and men. Involvement in chess is seen as a catalyst for boosting self-confidence and inspiring girls to pursue their interests, free from gender-based constraints.
Knight’s Honor Fellowship
The Knight’s Honor Fellowship is designed to assist top scholastic players in Oregon, as well as high school students who dedicate their time and efforts to volunteer in the Oregon chess community. This fellowship aims to acknowledge and support those who contribute to the chess community through their commitment and service.
Application Forms for all Types of Funding
Puddletown has been promoting chess for underrepresented minorities from their very beginning, especially girls and non-binary players. We want to continue that tradition with our training program as well!
And with this mission, we are proud to sponsor and provide scholarships to 6 girls or non-binary in their Level 2 training program. Level 2 is the beginner program at Puddletown and we believe that providing such training in a friendly setting with a strong curriculum, along with homework feedback will set these girls and non-binary players up for a successful chess career ahead. We are offering these scholarships to the first 6 girls or non-binary players each term who commit to participate in their respective school teams leading up to the big tournament.

Puddletown is thrilled to offer FREE training for low-income scholastic players (limited to 6 scholarships per term). Puddletown has been promoting chess for underrepresented minorities, especially girls, non-binary players, and low-income players from their very beginning.
We are offering these scholarships to the first 6 low-income players to register each term who commit to participate in tournaments regularly and put in their best possible effort into learning.

Chess club is a fun starting point for many chess players. With this in mind, Puddletown is excited to announce our school chess club funding program. This plan is open to all school chess clubs. The initiative aims to support and expand the reach of chess programs in schools, recognizing the game’s educational benefits such as enhancing problem-solving abilities, improving concentration, and promoting sportsmanship.
