Now Starring: Magician From Massachusetts

Mark your calendars! On Monday, January 2, 2023, Puddletown Chess will be hosting a seminar with IM Carissa Yip. Starting at 7pm PST, our ~90 minute Zoom webinar will aim to answer any questions you may have for a talented International Master. We will also answer questions about our training program.

Carissa Yip, a freshman at Stanford University, was the youngest female chess player to defeat a GM at only 10 years old. She is also the youngest American woman to become an International Master (IM). Carissa was the 2021 US Women’s Chess Champion, as well as multiple-time US Girls Junior Champion.

When I started playing chess, I heard a lot about Carissa. I loved watching the videos from her Magician4MA account on Chesskid, learning how to spot skewers and forks and all sorts of other tactics. Carissa was one of my role models, and I tried to emulate her style.

As I advanced in chess, I started playing in some of the same tournaments as Carissa. I got to speak to her at times during buffet breakfasts or other chance encounters. This year, I played in the US Girls Junior Closed while Carissa played in the US Junior Closed, and we both played in the SPICE Cup (ended yesterday!) as well. Getting to meet my role model was an amazing experience every time.

We at Puddletown Chess are honored to have this chance to learn from the experience of such a talented player. I, for one, am super excited to get to know Carissa a bit more. Too bad I don’t get all of the Q+A time to myself…

What questions do you have? What do you want to learn from an international master? Do you have questions about our training program? Join us on January 2nd with IM Carissa Yip! I signed up my daughter Cecelia in intermediate chess class . What should I prepare for these class. Does she need a chess board and chess pieces while she is taking class?

Thank you for your interest in our training program! Just come to class prepared with the previous class’s homework and a fun attitude. Pieces and board are not necessary for the class itself.

If you have any more program-related questions, stick around until the end of our seminar and we’ll be happy to answer them.
