The Sixth Rank (June) Puddletown Chess Tournament was a resounding success! Among them, 12 players were attending their first USCF-rated tournament, and 36 were girls. This was one of our biggest event at Puddletown so far. We hope to keep serving the community with high quality chess tournaments and training!
Quick fun fact: Why did we call this June tournament as the Sixth-rank Tournament?
We named our June tournament the “Six Rank” tournament because in chess, the sixth rank marks a critical turning point—especially for pawns. When a pawn crosses over to the sixth rank, it goes from being cautious to becoming a real threat. It’s close to promotion. It’s aggressive. It’s powerful. And it forces the opponent to respond.
That’s exactly the energy we wanted to bring into the tournament.
By June, many of our students had been working hard all year—training, playing, and leveling up. The “Six Rank” name symbolized that moment in their journey where they were no longer beginners. They were stepping into leadership roles, taking bolder risks, and becoming forces to be reckoned with—not just on the chessboard, but in life.
It was also a fun way to honor progress: the sixth rank isn’t the finish line, but it means you’re on the edge of transformation. Just like our players.
